Weekly Character Spotlight: Mabel Pines

Mabel Pines is a character from one of my favorite Disney shows; Gravity Falls. She is the twin sister of Dipper and the friend of many. During her summer stay at the Mystery Shack, she manages to gain a pet pig, cause ultimate chaos to be unleashed on the town, and clone-nap a boy band.

She is a comedic character, with strengths and flaws, as every character should have. She is actually said by Alex Hirsch himself, to be based off of his own twin sister, Ariel Hirsch. Mabel participates in hobbies like arts and crafts, scaring off boys, and knitting, which is why she is able to wear a different sweater every episode.

Mabel's intense boy-crazy phase led to her 'dating' a bunch of gnomes disguised as a "normal man" (Norman), a merman named Mermando, and crushing on such beauties as the Mattress King, Gabe Benson the puppet man, and Hot Elf. She is occasionally self centered, but aren't we all? Maybe not to her extent, as she had forced her brother to turn down an apprenticeship, makes her brother lose his chance with a girl so she could win back her pig, and trap a boy band from seeing the outside world.

Sounds bad, doesn't it?

She's not all bad though, with moments like in "The Sock Opera", when Mabel sacrificed her puppet show and her chance with the boy she liked, to save her brother from being possessed by Bill Cipher.

She is an incredibly optimistic girl, incredibly hyper and energetic, more so than any other character in the show, or any character from other media that I know of. There is truly something lovable about her character. Something I find interesting, is that it is a common headcanon (that may or may not be canon, I do not know) that Mabel reminds Bill Cipher a little bit of himself. She is an agent of chaos, she likes fun, and she is kind of selfish at times, all of the things Bill is (although for Bill, you could multiply that by one million).

She has a knack for matchmaking, pairing Tambry with Robbie, Melody with Soos, and attempting to pair Lazy Susan and Grunkle Stan, although that fails. At one point, her matchmaking had caused hurt within Wendy's friend group, after Mabel had stolen a love potion from Cupid and made Tambry and Robbie fall in love, it causes a friend group wide argument to break out. She has made a lot of mistakes, but something I think some people in the fandom forget is, she's just a kid.

Mabel is friends with a lot of people from Gravity Falls. Her and Soos have nicknames for each other, and a secret handshake. They both love to goof off together, because they both share the same optimistic personality. Her two best friends, Candy and Grenda, hang out with her very often, and were even accomplices in the kidnapping of the boy band clones. Gideon and Mabel were friends, prior to the trouble he had caused with her brother and the time he tried to force her to date him.

She's amazing at mini-golf, scrapbooking, sewing, knitting, bejeweling even making wax statues. She can also lock pick, and she has shown to be equally as smart as her brother, but in a different way.

In the end, Mabel was picked as the character of the week because of her creativity, charm, and the fact that she is just a ball of sunshine all around. Even though she's not my overall favorite character, she definitely deserves a spot in my top 6. Thank you for visiting dear reader, may I see you again soon. Much love!
